J. Harry Toler worked as a writer and editor at Boxoffice Magazine in Kansas City and later Chicago, Illinois during the 1930's and 40's.
I found this quote from him on the Internet attached to the
reopening of a theater in Teaneck New Jersey...
"Exhibitors, both owners and managers are asserting themselves in a most logical manner.
They are no longer content merely to let nature take its course as regards the will of the people
and the way patronage reacts to this picture or that. They're putting their houses in order
or a return to real prosperity, in which a theatre, to be profitable,
must become an attraction within itself."
BOXOFFICE is a film industry magazine dedicated to the movie theatre business published by Boxoffice Media LP. It started in 1920 as The Reel Journal, taking its current name in 1931and still publishes today, with an intended audience of theatre owners and film professionals.
