John met and associated with many colorful figures of the Plains ~
Including Ezra Meeker, Buffalo Bill, and Pawnee Bill and other famous Plainsmen.

Ezra Meeker
With the promise of 320 acres of free land in Oregon, Ezra Meeker hitched up two yoke of oxen, loaded his wife and month-old baby into a wagon, and headed west over the Oregon Trail in 1852. They were but three of the half million pioneers who journeyed over the 2,000-mile route from the Missouri River to Oregon's Willamette Valley in search of a new life. Eza Meeker was different, though, from other pioneers as he spent the rest of his life engrossed in the preservation of the historic trail by erecting trail monuments and petitioning Congress to enact a law to preserve the Oregon Trail. Unfortunately, he never lived to see his dream come true. A half century was to pass before Congress finally, in 1978, took action to preserve the historic route.

BUFFALO BILL
William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917)
Occupation:  Army scout, Pony Express Rider, ranch hand, wagon train driver,
buffalo hunter, fur trapper, fold prospector, showman
Will Bill was an American soldier, bison hunter and showman
He was born in the Iowa Territory (now the U.S. state of Iowa), in Le Claire but lived several years in Canada before his family moved to the Kansas Territory. Buffalo Bill received the Medal of Honor in 1872 for service to the US Army as a scout. One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill became famous for the shows he organized withcowboy themes, which he toured in Great Britain and Europe as well as the United States.

Pawnee Bill
Pawnee Bill (1860–1942), born Gordon William Lillie, was a Wild West showman and performer.
Best known for his short partnership with Buffalo Bill, Pawnee Bill was born February 14, 1860, in Bloomington, Illinois. His father, Newton, operated a flour mill in Bloomington until it burned to the ground in the 1870s. The family then moved to Wellington, Kansas where Gordon developed a love for the west. By the age of 19, he was working on the Pawnee Indian agency in Indian Territory. In 1883, he was given the chance to work with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show as the Pawnee interpreter. This work with the show would give him his nickname Pawnee Bill.
